Braided rugs made from old rags represent frugality and parsimony, but their flamboyant colors speak of a love for beauty. This rug, made of alternating garter and stockinette stitch strips shaped with short rows, gives you the chance to bring this classic beauty into your own home.

Don’t let the short row shaping scare you away from this rug. To make a more traditional version of this rug, like the Amish rugs from the early 1900s, make all of the strips from garter stitch and knit each one until it is long enough to reach around the previous section. The garter stitch strips will stretch and t around the oval with no shaping at all. Change colors randomly for a “no brainer” project, or create your own color pattern as you go.
