Welcome to Craftivist Camp!
When Donna and I first conceived this idea, we wanted to continue the work that Lara Neel and I did in our book Crafting the Resistance (a copy of which you will receive as part of this course) and that Donna did in her ebook Knitting as a Political Act. If you are interested in this course, you are one of the many people who see how scary the world, particularly the United States, is lately. You want to resist tyranny and fascism. You want to express your desire and belief in equality, justice and peace. Maybe you march and protest on the streets, maybe, like me, you have health issues which make that difficult. In any case, you want your voice to be heard all year long, not just in the voting booth. In this course we are playing with color while we learn all about the history of activism through craft. You’ll learn some new knitting techniques, or play within ones you already know. You’ll get ideas for new creative projects in which you can apply these techniques, and you’ll learn about many of those who came before you using craft as political statement. Spoiler Alert: we’ll take you all the way back to the American Revolution. It is our hope that Craftivist Camp will help you jump start, or revive, your resistance practice; and it is a practice. Resistance to fascism and tyranny is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires pacing and self care, a loud clear message and a subtly subversive one. We welcome you to the resistance. We thank you for choosing to enroll in Craftivist Camp and we hope you enjoy our time together. With gratitude and blessings, Heather
