I’ve been paying more attention to location and place in my reading lately. I find that the books I most enjoy evoke a precise sense of place. I want to improve in this area in my own writing. It’s all in the details, isn’t it? (Thanks, Natalie Goldberg!) But I can’t think about it too much (First thoughts! Don’t think!) or I get completely blocked and can’t write at all.

Before Old World Murder was published, several people asked if writing about real places made me nervous. I have a simple rule: I only write about real places that I love. Old World Wisconsin obviously fits that description—if I didn’t love the place, I wouldn’t have set a book there.
