To fit an adult human
20 in (51cm) circumference, will stretch to fit head several inches larger
Worsted weight yarn, 2 colors: approx 200 yds (190m) of MC and 25 yds (20m) of CC
5 sts/in in St st
Size 7 US (4.5mm) ndls to work in the round.
With MC, CO 100 sts.
Join to knit in the round.
Work in k1/p1 or k2/p2 ribbing for 3 in (7.5 cm) or desired length for brim. (Work double the length if you want to fold it up for extra warmth.)
Change to St st.
Knit 3 rnds.
Set up chart: Work sts 1-12 once, work rep sts 5 times, work sts 25-52 once.
After all rows of chart are complete, change back to MC and knit until hat hat measures 5-1⁄2 in (14cm) from top of brim, or 3-1⁄4 in (8cm) less than desired length.
Next rnd: (K23, k2tog) around–96 sts.
Next rnd: (K12, pm) around–8 sections of 12 sts.
Dec rnd: (Knit to last 2 sts before marker, k2tog) around.
Next rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until 8 sts rem.
Cut yarn, run tail through rem sts and gently tug to fasten off and gather in top of hat. Put tail to inside.
Weave in ends. Wash and dry flat to block.
