This is going to be an exciting cruise visiting some of the best ports in the Baltic. We have developed an on board educational program designed specifically for this cruise itinerary. Classes are taught while the ship is at sea and while in port you are free to explore on your own or with the group. Class size is limited ensure an enriching hands-on learning experience. Kniting Class Fees

Class registration fee is $270 for 18-hours. By taking the full class program you are receiving a 40% discount on the class program fees. Or, if you only want a single class or two, the class fees are $25 per hour.

Class Name: An Overview of Orenburg-Style Knitted Lace

Instructor Name: Galina Khmeleva

Class Length: 6 Hours

Date: August 16, 2014 — Time: (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM AND 2:00PM – 5:00PM)

Cost: $150.00

Description: Mouse-print, cats paw, honeycomb and accordion are four of the ten basic elements that form the core of Orenburg’s knitted lace tradition. Specific combinations of these elements result in the exquisite pattern designs that evolve into Orenburg lace shawls and scarves. In this class, Galina will introduce students to these basic elements while discussing how the genius of the lace knitters of Orenburg has taught them to combine specific elements to form elegant motifs with their near perfect symmetry that adorn this consummate example of hand knit lace. Galina will also introduce you to grafting technique that will ‘seam’ almost magical in its simplicity and versatility, and she will have you knitting continental before this class is over.

Description: In this workshop, we will learn about stories from knitters who live around the Baltic sea and Eastern Europe, and we will learn to knit a colorwork pattern from each region and knit a sampler. Stories and techniques will be different in every workshop, but each class will include patterns from places as diverse as: Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and more.

Experience Level: Intermediate

  • 2 skeins of approx 100 yards of worsted-weight yarn (each a different color) for knitting a sampler

Description: Orenburg knitted lace is perhaps most often recognized by its exquisitely detailed scalloped border (teeth). In this class, Galina will first introduce students tot he fascinating knitting techniques that result in this ‘perfect’ edge, then she will explore various ways to turn ordinary table, bed, and bath linens, curtains and even favorite clothing items into luxurious collectibles with the addition of simple, yet so very sophisticated Orenburg lace ‘perfect edge’ border.

 

Class Name: Symbols in Stitches Lecture

Description: In this lecture we will examine symbols in knitting on two levels. First, we will look at the symbols used in knitting designs around the world represented in texture, cable, and lace stitches. We will learn about the hidden meanings in the symbols as well as myths and old wives tales about the symbology. Second, we will learn how to find the hidden meaning in knitting chart symbols, and compare charts from Estonian and Lithuanian knitting books to the symbols used in UK and US knitting books. With the knowledge we gain, understanding the charts that may have seemed ³like Greek² to you in the past will become second nature.

Description: Are things that come in three’s truly better? When it comes to Orenburg knitted lace the answer is a resounding YES! The triangle shape is perhaps the oldest and most aesthetically versatile of all shawl motifs. In this class, Galina will present to you three distinct design techniques to construct a triangular-shaped shawl so you can select the approach that best fits your knitting style. Description: Beads add a fabulous touch! Knowing just the basics of knitting, you can easily create colorful designs with beads. Using only garter stitch and learning how to read and work from beading charts, in this workshop, we will make beautiful jeweled wrist warmer cuffs that are inspired by those popular in Lithuania. We will also learn beautiful crochet trim stitches – with and without beads, for trimming the wrist warmers.

Experience Level: Beginners welcome. If you can do the knit stitch you can make these warmersginners welcome! If you can do the knit stitch, you can make these beaded wrist warmers.

Skills Required: Casting on and knit stitch.
