Knitted in a simple check pattern with garter-stitch welts, neck trim, and cuffs, this sweater is simple enough that you will be able to relax as you knit. If you’ve never worked with all-over knit-and-purl stitch patterns, this sweater is a good first project for trying out this design technique.

From as early as 1550 until around 1860, Danish men wore knitted nightcaps. This simple style is as popular today as it was in the sixteenth century. If you use the same yarn you plan to use for a sweater, your cap can also serve
as a large gauge swatch.

Although seaman’s scarves did not originate in the Netherlands, they have been knitted there for more than a hundred years! The ends of a seaman’s scarf are traditionally knitted in garter stitch, but they can also be decorated with pattern stitches as I’m showing here. The center of the scarf is worked in ribbing so that it fits snugly around the neck.
I borrowed this pattern concept because I wanted to offer a project that would give you a chance to practice following charts and working texture- pattern stitches flat. (To practice working similar stitches in the round, with the right side of the work always facing you, check out the Danish Cap pattern, available either separately or in Ethnic Knitting Discovery.

On this sampler fisherman’s sweater, horizontal sweater patterns cover the body and part of the sleeves. If you would like to simplify the design, work a large section of stockinette stitch above the ribbing and below the armholes and use only horizontal stripes on the yoke, or work the entire body and the sleeves in an easy check pattern.
