These are my corrections to the Endpapers Shawl pattern from The Knitter's Book of Yarn by Clara Parks. (This is a great book, please don't be put off because one pattern in it has this many mistakes. There is a ton of excellent info in the book, and the other patterns I've read through don't seem to be plagued by errors.) This project is beautiful, it is not hard to make, and it has some very interesting techniques, so I hope you will not be intimidated by the errata and that you will try to make one anyway. You can do it!

Endpapers Shawl

I'm trying to give enough information here so you can fix the pattern without rewriting so much that I would be essentially republishing the pattern. Even with my extensive corrections below, you still need the book to make this shawl.

Corrections to Border:
In the pattern setup row, when you get to the CDD in the middle of the row, add a yarnover after it. The center of EVERY RS row should be (yo, CDD, yo) and the center stitch of EVERY WS row should be purled -- even when the rest of the row is knitted. I placed markers to separate the 3 sts at the beg and end of the row and the center 3 sts from the chart repeats.

After the setup row, on the next WS row, you purl across. This is to establish that the first and last 3 sts of the row are maintained in St st, and the middle portions of the row are worked in patts as est (in this case, the WS row of all charts are plain purl rows). When you get to row 5 of the border, where you knit on a WS row, knit the first and last 3 sts of the row, but purl that one center st. This creates a garter ridge all the way across, except for the CDD at the bottom corner of the shawl.

Corrections to Chart A:
There should be a 10 stitch repeat, including all columns EXCEPT the leftmost column of the chart. The leftmost column is a balancing stitch that is knitted at the end of all the repeats, making this a multiple of 10+1 which fits evenly into the 111 sts allotted in the pattern.

Corrections to Chart B:
On rows 3 and 5, add a / (k2tog) one stitch in from the right edge of the row.

Corrections to Center:
The setup rows are correct. I have included them in my revision of the Fir Cone chart below. In my reworking of the chart, I show you where each new stitch is added at the end of each row, and how the new stitches are incorporated into the pattern. The original chart did not include this, and in addition the repeat was not marked, and it did not include a note that you work a ssk instead of a CDD at the end of the last repeat. Basically, just ignore the chart in the book and use this one instead.

I don't know exactly what row you end up on when you finish the center of the body, but it doesn't matter at all.

endpapers shawl revised fir cone chart for center of shawl

Corrections to Top Edge:
When you pick up along the border, you will have a total of 8 repeats, not 7, for a total of 24 sts, on each end. When you pick up in the center, you will pick up as instructed at each CDD and in the center st of each (yo, k1, yo).

That's it! I hope this is helpful to those who want to make this pattern. I'm also submitting the corrections to the author so she can put them on her errata page.

Comments

Thank you. I have had the yarn for this project for 9 months and am finally caught up enough with other things to start. I do love this book and your Arctic Lace.
